He graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario with a Master of Arts degree in History and now resides in Brackendale where he has lived for the past ten years. He writes an opinion column for the Squamish Chief and is the editor of The Squamish Historian, the official Squamish Historical Society newsletter.
Helmut is promoting the history of the Squamish area by producing video documentaries based on archival and family photos, and interviews with local residents. Among his recent productions are: Squamish Nation: Stories from the Heart, The West Coast Logging Legacy, Mary MacGregor's Journey, Squamish Valley Logging Lore and The Legend of John Drenka.
Helmut's photo was taken at the entrance to the Squamish Loggers Sports grounds. Logging was at the heart of the Squamish economy for most of the 20th century and the "steam donkey" in the backgound played a major role in the rise of the forestry industry in the region.
